Setting your goals before you start your business is very important at the beginning of your venture. You should know exactly what you are going to produce, in what amounts, how many people you will need, how much money you will spend, and how much profit you can expect from your business. This would be the first step for you towards making a business plan. Preparing a business plan will allow you to incorporate your business, get necessary government documents, or licensing,, help you to choose the right location, get environmental clearance, and so on. You will also need a business plan to get funding from a bank or get investors.
You want to stick to the instrument(s) you know, but you may be a skilled enough musician to offer lessons on several different instruments, or those in a particular class, e.g., stringed or woodwind.You can decide to take on individuals or classes, depending on space and availability of instruments. Public schools are continually reducing their commitment to art and music classes for students, so you can try to work with the public school system to supplement their efforts in those areas.

45. Smartphones: Just because your business is based from home, doesn’t mean you need to be stuck at home. A smartphone can help you run your business from anywhere. “Smartphones can create flexibility and accessibility while attending to the children’s needs,” says Monica Harris Mondolovich, who has been running a home-based business, MHM Editorial Services, for 10 years while raising two young children.


Short term: Getting things done. This is waking up every day and taking steps towards achieving your goals. One day, it may mean buying business cards for your new business, or applying for a business license or hiring a lawyer to help you incorporate your business. Or it may mean researching your idea on the Internet or calling prospective clients to find out who might be interested in buying the products or services that you intend to offer for sale. You cannot build a business without taking these short-term, but important, steps.
And in terms of #4 (Being Different), I can still remember driving home from a pretty boring ed policy conference in Lansing, MI, and thinking, “Geez, why did I go to this?” when it hit me: I can be different by bringing a somewhat irreverant, non-freaked out approach to education (and, in particular, the standards that I’m niched into). There are 3.5 million teachers in the USA, and if even 10% of them are like-minded folks who simply refuse to freak out with Chicken Little dances, that’s a great market.
