And as the population ages, even more people are going to want to make their homes more livable by investing in the renovations they need to stay where there are. Growth in home improvement and repair expenditures will reach 8 percent by the start of 2017, according to a report from Harvard's Joint Center for Housing (the historical average is just 4.9 percent).
